Dennistoun Wild Goose Chase 2009

Saturday May 16th 2009

"...the coming together of the community on that day was such a positive feeling. It was great to see Mums, Dads, Weans, Friends and otherwise randoms all taking part, looking for clues and sneakily exchanging answers was just magic! :)

The actors camped up in the RAPA were a real laugh too, although i don't think the weans (or some adults) knew they were acting, they just appeared to be a little unhinged and fitted in perfectly!

Thanks again, great idea, great fun, well done.

Oh nearly forgot WASPS. It was very refreshing to have had such a hospitable reception by them too. Scores marauding 'goose hunters' painting & feathering face masks (and the mess that goes along with it) in a live exhibition space could have gone very wrong, but it didn't, which was nice!"

With free entry, it was open to all-comers and featured exciting games and fun challenges with arty, sporty and sideshow themes, in various venues throughout Dennistoun. Local teams competed for a specially commissioned trophy and prizes of local meals out, plus other treats and gifts.

The teams started with a round of  fantastic fun fair sideshow games at Dennistoun New Church Hall. The route then continued via the Reidvale Adventure Playground with a silly sports session. A quirky quick quiz at Dennistoun Library  followed  before  finishing with some  amazing  arty activities  at  the Parade Artists Spring Show at  WASPS artists'  studios  on Hanson Street.

In addition, a series of questions tested the teams' powers of observation en-route, with a cunning quest to uncover the details of Dennistoun's hidden surroundings and a further chance to add to the to the points total.

With aching limbs, but smiles on their faces, all entrants said they'd had a great day and would be back for more next year.

At 4pm, the totals were tallied and the winning teams were presented with the a unique trophy designed by a local artist and the local prize bonanza.

Thanks again to all the local businesses who contributed prizes: Alberto's, All-in-One, Cafe Sejuiced, Cafe Spice, Dopey Diner, Eye Candy, Famous Wok, Florresters, Fork'n'Knife, Hair By Linda, House Of Flowers, Minar's, No ProbsIT, Olive Cafe, Robert Dick, Celino's, Tibo, Visage Opticians and Yummy Yummy.

Dennistoun Kids' Treasure Hunt 2009

Wed May 7th - Fri May 15th 2009

"We had lots of fun on thursday along with tons of other kids going along Duke Street to find the treasure."

treasure hunt 2009

The children’s took place in the week leading up to the Wild Goose Chase. Every primary school child in Dennistoun recieved an entry form asking them to identify the one unusual object in shop windows on Duke Street and Alexandra Parade. An example would be a football in the window of a chemist. Non-Dennistoun schooled children were able to entry via the library.

The boy and girl (from each school), with the keenest eye each won a £50 games voucher, and every child taking part received a sticker and a certificate specially designed by a local artist.  Every child in the class that returned the most forms got a strawberry tart thanks to the generosity of James Allen bakers on Alexandra Parade.

For reference, the entry form can be downloaded here (as a PDF): just click on this link.  The Teacher Instructions are here.

Over 200 primary school children took part, and several completely correct  answer  sheets were submitted  from each school.  The Treasure Hunt winners were as follows:

  • Alexandra Parade - Luisa Riley from P1A and Alexander O’Brien from P2
  • Golfhill - Emma O’Connor and Jamie Wallace, both from P4
  • St Denis’ - Gabriel Gaisry from P1 and Laura McGowan from P4
  • Library entries prize - Shannon Craw
  • P3B at Alexandra Parade won the prize for most entries from a single class.

Well done all! We hope that everyone who took part had fun doing it.

Thanks again to the local businesses for their co-operation with hosting the "odd objects".

Logo Competition 2008

October 2007

Our logo came about as the result of a primary school competition.

Someone had the idea of harnessing the creative potential of schoolchildren for the design of a logo. Adrian Keefe, one of DCT's small band, volunteered himself for the purpose of liasing with local schools and facilitiating a logo competition, partly because he had studied graphic design at college.

The Headteacher at Golfhill Primary, Janet Dunlop, was duly contacted and happily agreed to allocating a class a small amount of time to this project. It was here that Adrian met Mrs Gray and her class of smiling P7 children. Adrian explained to the children what logos were, how they worked and set the competition. He wanted the children to think about where they lived, look around them and try to come up with something that was expressive of the area.

He went back a few days later and was delighted with the results. Here, in bright colours, were smiling people, skateboards, balloons, rainbows, roads, flowers and thistles - along with the obligatory bells, trees, birds, etc, that any visual exercise to do with Glasgow seems to spawn. Themes included multiculturalism, togetherness and friendship. The images were all positive, full of enthusiasm and joy. There were none of the issues that adults moan about in urban areas!

The DCT committee convened to look through all the drawings and, with much difficulty, chose a winner. It had been designed by the duo (teamwork was felt to be appropriate!) of Ryan Sutherland and Luke McGilvray, who may one day combine to form a world famous advertising agency! Adrian went back to the school for the "award ceremony" which culminated in the presentation of four complimentary cinema tickets for each boy, kindly donated by Cineworld Parkhead."
